Becks Road to be Temporarily Detoured

DULUTH, MN-A portion of Becks Road near 108th Ave West in Duluth will be closed on Friday, October 18 as Western Lake Superior Sanitary District (WLSSD) continues a large project to repair damage to a portion of its Scanlon Interceptor pipeline occurring in the June 2012 floods.  The short-term Becks Road closure will occur for one day on Friday, October 18, 2013, and will affect Becks Road between Commonwealth Avenue and 108th Avenue West.

Detour signage will be posted to route traffic along Gary Street for the one-day closure. During the closure, WLSSD contractors will be removing a temporary pipeline placed under Becks Road in June 2013 to ensure uninterrupted sewer service during the repair projects.  Non-local traffic is advised to seek alternate routes. All travelers in the area are advised to use caution, slow down and obey signage in the construction area.

WLSSD is repairing and rehabilitating 1.01-miles of its Scanlon Interceptor-a large interceptor sewer that carries wastewater from a location on East Highway 61 in Thomson Township to WLSSD’s Knowlton Creek Pump Station near the Duluth Zoo.  Two areas of the Scanlon Interceptor were significantly damaged in the June 2012 floods and must be repaired to ensure the reliability of this major pipeline. One of the project areas near the Duluth Zoo has been completed.  The remaining flood-related repairs will be completed by the end of 2013; however, construction activity is expected to continue through mid-2014 as WLSSD completes additional rehabilitation work to ensure reliable service to the western portions of WLSSD’s service area. Minimal short-term detours and road closures are expected as a result of the continuing project.

Western Lake Superior Sanitary District provides award-winning wastewater and solid waste services to residents, businesses and industries within its 530 square mile legislative boundaries in Southern St. Louis and northern Carlton counties, and is a nationally recognized leader in pollution prevention.
