Storm-Related Food Waste and Yard Waste Disposal Information
Western Lake Superior Sanitary District (WLSSD) urges residents to utilize food waste drop sites for prompt disposal of spoiled contents from refrigerators and freezers during this extended power outage.
Free Food Waste Drop Sites are open at the Yard Waste Compost Site and Materials Recovery Center (hours and addresses below) for large volumes of unpackaged food waste; additional drop site locations are listed at wlssd.com.
YES: Do Drop off in Food Waste Bins
Anything that is or was edible, removing ALL packaging: raw and cooked food, meat, fish, small bones, spoiled/moldy food, fruits, vegetables, peels & pits, cheese, breads, dough, pasta, rice, old pet food, tea bags, coffee grounds & filter.
Contents may be bagged in paper grocery sacks, compostable bags (available for free at WLSSD facilities), or loose in reusable buckets or bins.
NO: Don’t Drop Off in Food Waste Bins
Packaging or containers of any kind, including glass, plastic, foil, or butcher paper; pet waste, kitty litter, diapers, liquids, dirt, rocks or yard waste.
The WLSSD Yard Waste Compost Site at 27th Ave W & the waterfront is accepting woody debris and brush:
- Brush (any material over 1/4 inch in diameter, from Minnesota only*) $8/yard
- *WLSSD facilities ban brush from Wisconsin due to the Emerald Ash borer presence in Douglas County.
- Dirt and Sod (3 yard limit, no businesses) $8/yard
- Twigs ¼ inch in diameter or less, leaves, grass clippings, house & garden plants FREE
- Root balls cannot be accepted at this facility, please bring to the Materials Recovery Center for disposal in the landfill, fees apply.
The WLSSD Materials Recover Center (MRC) on Rice Lake Rd is accepting brush for $8/yard. Root balls containing dirt and soil is accepted for $22/yard. Other storm debris, such as shingles or building materials, are also accepted at the MRC for $22/yard.
