The Western Lake Superior Sanitary District, a national leader in environmental protection and pollution prevention, seeks an Engineer to manage site, facility and process improvements and provide technical and professional engineering support for our collection, wastewater treatment and solid waste facilities.




Knowledge of recognized and acceptable engineering standards and practice; knowledge of various construction methods common to wastewater treatment plant and underground utility systems; ability to interpret construction plans and specifications; and inspect the same during implementation; knowledge and skill in the use of engineering equipment, charts, maps and tables; ability to understand and interpret mechanical and electrical drawings, diagrams and specifications; ability to estimate labor and materials for proposed work; ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written communications; and the ability to develop effective working  relationships with co-workers, other employees, the general public and other governmental agencies.





Minimum Qualifications

Possess a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in either Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, or Electrical Engineering or another engineering field if required by the position.  A minimum of two years of post-graduate engineering work experience is required.  A desirable qualification is successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineer (FE) exam.

Job Functions


  • Assists with development of standards related to project development and management and other engineering functions.
  • Provides technical engineering support to various departments and management staff to optimize various system processes and assist with project development activities.
  • Assists with process improvement projects and preparing necessary reports, presentations and communicates results.
  • Assists in the completion of design and preparation of engineering plans, specifications, and reports.
  • Assists with engineering analysis in support of capital project development and delivery.
  • Assists with selection of qualified consultants for projects and prepares consultant contracts.
  • Manages capital project budgets and schedules by; coordinating work performed by consultants and contractors, coordinating District project teams, assisting with project bidding activities, reviewing pay applications submitted by consultants and contractors, and performing other contract administration duties.
