WLSSD Extends Closure of All Solid Waste Facilities to the Public

DULUTH, MN— In compliance with Governor Walz’ extended Stay at Home order, Western Lake Superior Sanitary District (WLSSD) facilities will remain closed to the general public.  The closures will continue until further notice. Facility closures include:

• WLSSD Administrative Offices, 2626 Courtland St., Duluth will close to public traffic. WLSSD staff will continue to assist the public by telephone and via email.
• WLSSD Materials Recovery Center (MRC) off Rice Lake Road.
• WLSSD Household Hazardous Waste Facility, on 27^th Ave West.
• WLSSD Yard Waste Compost Site, on 27^th Avenue West.

During the closures, WLSSD encourages residents use available disposal alternatives:

• delay disposing of materials that don’t belong in the trash,
• use one of several alternate permitted disposal options available locally,
• Call local garbage haulers who can provide special pickup services for yard waste, bulky materials, or provide dumpster rental for larger jobs.

WLSSD’s will continue to provide its core services of wastewater treatment for the region and ensuring the availability of disposal for commercial garbage haulers.

“We are aware that many people are anticipating the opening of our Yard Waste Compost Site,” said Marianne Bohren, WLSSD executive director. “They are cleaning up their yards while they respect the Stay at Home Order. In compliance with the Governor’s order, we will remain closed. We hope that people will hold onto their yard waste until its safe for us to open. We remain committed to our work to protect public health and the natural environment.”

Yard waste does not belong in the trash.  Some area waste haulers offer curbside pickup for yard waste. These options are likely to be available beginning in early May. WLSSD encourages area residents to contact their garbage haulers to see if this service is available at their homes.
