It’s Fair Time!

It’s fair time!

Is it just me, or do some other folks feel nostalgic about the county fair, too? Time with family and friends, rides and games, music, funnel cake and cheese curds — all that and a taste of farm life to boot, (ahem, dust and sweat)…it all warms my heart in a way that feels like one last valiant grasp for a little more summer, with the start of school and fall weather just around the corner.

WLSSD is proud to be a part of the county fair tradition!  Every Year, WLSSD has a booth at the Carlton County Fair.  It is a perfect opportunity for WLSSD staff to share information about our programs and services with the community.  And, it is going to be fun. We have a ginormous “Wheel of Fortune”, that is not only a blast just to spin, but the end result is a prize.  We do add a little WLSSD and environmental trivia to the mix, so there is some effort required to walk away with a Nut Roll or a yard stick (full disclosure), but it is soooo worth it.

One of the programs that we highlight at the fair is our Biosolids Program.  Biosolids are the nutrient-rich materials in wastewater that are further treated at high temperatures for about a month to become a fertilizer.  Farmers use Field Green® as a highly effective fertilizer for some crops in our area, especially hay, and have increased yields as a result.  The organic matter in Field Green® also makes the soil healthier, and helps to retain moisture – something farmers’ are thinking about a lot this summer with the endless hot, dry conditions.

We hope you’ll stop by our booth at the fair.  We look forward to having a chat.  Please don’t judge if you find us slurping on a giant glass of lemonade or with fingers sticky from cotton candy — we’ll be livin’ our best fair lives, and we hope you will be too.  It may be nearing the end of our hard-to-come-by warm Minnesota months, but the fair gives us one more solid dose of summer and memories that we can carry through the fall…and maybe a lifetime.
