Can you imagine a day without water?

Imagine a day with out water

Can you imagine a day without water? I mean, really, can you?

So many of us live near the shores of Lake Superior for its awe-inspiring beauty and the lifetime of recreational opportunities it offers.  And sometimes, we might also think about the fresh, clean, delicious water it provides us for drinking and for other daily necessities (ahem…Flushing! Brushing teeth! Cooking! Washing clothes! The list is endless).  Maybe this is your day to celebrate access to water from this beautiful lake, even if for just one day.

This week we’ll be sharing some posts about water, as well as what it takes to keep it clean and to maintain the infrastructure for drinking water, stormwater and wastewater.  After all, “Imagine a Day Without Water” (an annual educational campaign about the value of water) is just around the corner on October 21st.  This annual event reminds us that every day, is a great day, to celebrate water—because imagine what we’d do without it?

More than meets the eye!

There is SO MUCH that happens behind the scenes (and underground) to ensure that our community’s wastewater—everything that goes down the drain from homes, businesses and industries— is properly treated and returned to the St. Louis River. WLSSD is proud to play a critical role in keeping our waterways clean by treating nearly 40 million gallons of wastewater, every day!  Check out some of the investments that go into our infrastructure to keep our system of pipes, pump stations, and the plant itself, operating 24/7—so that you can continue to flush without interruption. For some insights on the “value of water” in the U.S., take a look at this infographic.

Let’s pass on the value of water to the next generation(s)

The “Imagine a Day Without Water” campaign gently reminds us to “pipe up” and teach our youngest generations about the importance of water. We can literally “play” an important role in helping our kiddos develop an appreciation for our water resources in lots of fun ways—cooking, kayaking, gardening, going for a walk on the beach. Whatever your “jam” is, it probably has a story to tell about water!  Check out this game developed by American Water Works Association and Water Environment Federation. Don’t be a drip, make it game night!

Can we talk about beer for a minute?

At this point in the “Imagine a Day Without Water” campaign, we’ve established how fortunate we are to have amazingly fresh and clean water from The Greatest of the Great Lakes. We’ve tossed around some facts and figures about the costs of keeping water flowing, both out of your taps and down your drains.  We’ve even played around with some ideas for sharing our water wisdom with the next generation(s). And so there is just one more thing to be said.  NO WATER, NO BEER. (Whether you drink beer or not, you understand this would be a big deal in the Microbrewery Metropolis of Minnesota—and the larger point that WATER IS EVERYTHING.). Mic drop.
