What We Take

You are invited to WLSSD’s free family-friendly open house!

WLSSD is celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Clean Water Act (CWA) on October 18th, 2022.

We want to celebrate with YOU!

Event Updates, October 14, 2022:

We are only one weekend away from the Clean Water Act (CWA) Celebration!  We are excited to host staff, families and our community at the open house on October 18th – 50 years TO THE DAY of the signing of CWA in 1972!!

Our aim is to provide a fun & educational event that celebrates the CWA and highlights WLSSD’s efforts to restore and protect the vitality of the St. Louis River.  Here are some things to look forward to:

  1. The “Wonderful World of Wastewater” table will have hands-on models and activities demonstrating the process of treating wastewater.
  2. Test your trivia prowess at the “Wheel of Fortune”!  Answer a question about WLSSD, CWA, or maybe even PFAS, and win a glamorous prize.
  3. The CWA and the work we do at WLSSD everyday have helped make the St. Louis River swimmable and fishable.  Come to the event and play our “Let’s Go Fishing” game.  You will cast your bait for a guaranteed catch every time (prizes)!
  4. Y’all know how much we love our hard-working colleagues, the microbes, right?  Make and take your own microbes at the craft table.  Who doesn’t love pompoms and googly eyes?!
  5. “Find the Fish” scavenger hunt. How well do you know the fish that live in the St. Louis River?
  6. There will also be tables highlighting employment opportunities, historical perspectives on WLSSD, community partnerships, and more!
  7. We’ll be munching on sandwich bites and chips provided by MidCoast Catering Co.  Snack-a-licious! We’ll also have a variety of beverages, including Mike and Jen’s Cocoa.
  8. Lauralloons, a local balloon artist, will be at the event creating water-themed balloon creations for attendees to take home!

Need I say more?? We hope to see you Tuesday, October 18th, 5-7:30pm!

WLSSD has been cleaning wastewater and making a difference in the recovery and sustained health of the St. Louis River, in part, thanks to the CWA!

The purpose of the CWA is to reduce water pollution and to make U.S. waterways swimmable and fishable.  When the CWA passed in 1972, millions of dollars in federal funding was provided to build WLSSD’s advanced wastewater collection and treatment facilities. Additionally, the CWA established regulations that limit pollutants discharged into waterways from community sources.  The St. Louis River is swimmable and fishable thanks to the CWA, WLSSD and the efforts of our community as a whole.

Let’s celebrate clean water!
