Spring into the new season with WLSSD at our Courtland Street Block Party!
Western Lake Superior Sanitary District (WLSSD) is here to help with all things spring! Spring cleaning, garden prep, yard waste disposal, repurposing, and painting – we’ve got you covered! On Friday, April 21st, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., WLSSD is having an open house to usher in spring at the Yard Waste Compost Site and Household Hazardous Waste Facility on Courtland Street in Duluth.
Are you feeling a “spring” in your step for spring cleaning? Spring is a perfect time for cleaning out your medicine cabinets. WLSSD’s Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) facility will be hosting a pharmaceuticals and sharps collection during our Block Party. Proper disposal of sharps and medications helps keep family and friends safe, protects sanitation workers, and prevents damage to our environment. Learn more: Medicine Disposal | WLSSD. As long as your spring cleaning is on a roll, bring us the chemicals and paint from your basement that need a new home or safe disposal. Your leftover paint or and stain can become someone’s epic spring project!
Have you been saving up your film plastic for recycling? Bring that to our HHW facility as well! Plastic grocery bags, zip-top bags, bubble wrap, and other stretchy plastic films can be recycled through a specialty program (but don’t belong in your recycling bin at home!). If you can’t make it to our Block Party, you can drop off your recyclable film plastics in bins at WLSSD’s HHW facility, Materials Recovery Center (MRC), and the region’s rural recycling sites.
Did the heavy snow drop some branches and trees in your yard? Bring them to us! Drop off leaves (for free), and trees and logs ($10/cubic yard) during the spring re-opening of our Yard Waste Compost Site on April 21st! Yard waste is ground up and composted along with food scraps from the community. Speaking of compost, we’ll have our fresh batch of Garden Green® ready to go, too!

- Take a 15 minute “behind-the-scenes” tour of our compost site and learn more about our process: 10 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. (spots are limited, call 218-740-4784).
- Play games for a chance to win Garden Green swag!
- Get supplies for saving food scraps at home to bring to our residential drop sites!
