Block Party on April 26th: Party like it’s spring 2024!
Welcome to spring! The Western Lake Superior Sanitary District (WLSSD) is here to inspire your spring cleaning, organizing, and gardening. Got unwanted medications or chemicals in need of safe disposal? Anxious to drop off yard waste and pick up compost for garden prep? Looking for paint for your next project? We’ve got you covered! On Friday, April 26th, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., WLSSD is hosting a Block Party to celebrate spring at the Household Hazardous Waste Facility (HHW) and Yard Waste Compost Site (YWCS) on Courtland Street in Duluth.
Spring is a great time to freshen up your medicine cabinets. Our HHW facility will be hosting a pharmaceuticals and sharps collection during our Block Party. Proper disposal of sharps and medications helps keep family and friends safe, protects sanitation workers, and prevents damage to our environment. Learn more: Medicine Disposal | WLSSD.
Need more storage space? Don’t forget to bring us the chemicals and paint you’ve stashed in your basement or garage that are in need of a new home or safe disposal. And who knows? You might find some FREE paint in our HHW Reuse Center to restore that your favorite rocking chair!
Have you been saving up your film plastic for recycling? Bring that to our HHW facility as well! Plastic grocery bags, zip-top bags, bubble wrap, and other stretchy plastic films can be recycled through a specialty program (but don’t belong in your recycling bin at home!). If you can’t make it to our Block Party, you can drop off your recyclable film plastics in bins at WLSSD’s HHW facility, Materials Recovery Center (MRC), and the region’s rural recycling sites.
Our Yard Waste Compost Site is open as of April 17th! Drop off leaves (for free), and trees and logs ($10/cubic yard)! Yard waste is ground up and composted along with food scraps from the community. Speaking of compost, we’ll have our fresh batch of Garden Green® ready to go, too. We’ll also have games, activities, prizes and tours—look for the white tent at the YWCS and we’ll show you where to park!

HHW Facility:
- Drop off sharps and medications
- Drop off film plastic
- Learn about PFAS and see examples of common household items that contain them
- Learn how to safely manage batteries to prevent fires
- Bring chemicals, fluorescent bulbs, batteries, and other hazardous materials for safe disposal
- Pick up and/or drop off paint and stain
- Make a DIY cleaning solution
- Win some prizes!
YWCS:
- Drop off yard waste
- Buy Garden Green compost
- Take a 20-30 minute “behind-the-scenes” tour of our compost site and learn more about our process: 10 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m.
- Give our Wheel of Fortune a whirl for a chance to win Garden Green swag!
- Get supplies for storing food scraps at home to bring to our residential drop sites!
