Break Free from the [Gifty] Chains that Bind You
Holiday gift giving is just around the corner and there’s no better time than the present to change your habits. Not only can gifting be overwhelming, pricey, and wasteful but this year is messy for other reasons: some global supply chains are still struggling to meet demand, and shipping and logistics are challenged during an always-busy (but now more than ever) season.
Rather than lament the shiny tchotchke trapped in a shipping container off the California shore, hitch your wagon to the here and now and invest in local activities. Consumable gifts and experiences— tickets to an event or a membership to an area attraction— leave behind little in the way of waste but contribute plenty of meaningful memories.
Consider gift cards for restaurants in the recipient’s neighborhood, or a specialty food shop that carries a product significant to you both. Whip up some baked goods or treats and set aside some time to deliver them (or enclose a sweet note). Families appreciate flexible options for fun and entertainment, so consider a membership to a local organization that provides exhibits, classes, events or simply warm and entertaining spaces for wintertime fun.
Other gifts that deliver big without leaving junk behind include gym memberships, movement or exercise classes, and punch cards for open swimming at area pools. Check out Community Education course offerings from local school districts or universities and choose one together with your gift recipient. Regional folk schools and Makerspaces also offer tons of opportunities to learn new skills and meet others with shared interests.
Break free from the “stuff” surrounding the holiday season and seek meaningful, shared experiences to reduce waste and keep it cozy this year.
