Q & A: Empty helium tank?
I bought a small helium tank at a craft store to blow up balloons for an event. It’s empty. What do I do with it now?
We hope the event was a smashing success. Your helium tank might be empty but your party-tank ought to be topped up nicely.
Disposal of these small, single use tanks is easier than you might think. First, check the label to see if the manufacturer or supplier has a take-back program. It isn’t common, but it’s a good start.
Next, some scrap metal buyers will accept empty, non-refillable helium tanks for recycling. Contact the scrap metal buyers directly to learn how to prepare the tank for recycling with them. Small tanks are not accepted in curbside recycling.
If recycling options aren’t available or convenient, you may dispose of these tanks in the trash. Release any remaining helium from the tank and remove the nozzle if possible. Contact your local hauler for more information.
Large, commercial grade tanks must be returned to compressed gas retailers. Contact them directly to make arrangements.
