WLSSD Cautions Residents about Explosives
The Staff at WLSSD’s Materials Recovery Center (MRC) had quite a surprise the Saturday after Christmas. A hand grenade was left for disposal at the facility! It was wrapped in bubble wrap and found inside a metal tin in the mixed waste area. It is believed to have been left for disposal only, not with intent for harm.
After the grenade was found, staff quickly moved customers off site and closed the MRC for the remainder of the day. WLSSD coordinated with local authorities to transport the explosive device to a safe location.
Residents occasionally find explosive materials such as dynamite, TNT, blasting caps and loaders, military memorabilia or explosive chemicals in homes, barns, garages, etc. Explosive and reactive materials are very dangerous and should be handled with extreme caution. Residents who find this material should move to a safe place and call 911. Do not transport explosive materials or bring them to WLSSD facilities for disposal.
Another job well done for the staff at the MRC. Quick thinking and stellar safety procedures will have us all ringing a safe and healthy New Year!
