Lake Superior Day Tour of WLSSD
Public Invited to Tour WLSSD Facilities in Celebration of Lake Superior Day
Duluth, MN – The Western Lake Superior Sanitary District (WLSSD) will host public tours of the wastewater treatment plant and organics composting facility on Thursday, July 17 from 1:00-2:30 p.m. The tours are being offered in conjunction with other local events scheduled to celebrate Lake Superior Day. Visitors may participate in either the wastewater treatment tour (appropriate for visitors ages 13 and older) or the organics composting facility tour (appropriate for visitors of all ages).
Visitors on the wastewater treatment tour will have the opportunity to learn about the biological process that returns cleaned water to the St. Louis River and ultimately to Lake Superior. Visitors on the organics composting facility tour will learn about the biological processes that turn organic material like food scraps and yard waste into a valuable soil amendment: WLSSD’s Garden Green® Compost you’ll digTM. Both tours will allow visitors a first-hand look at the processes and equipment used in operations.
Public parking for Thursday’s tours is available directly in front of WLSSD’s Administration Building at 27th Ave. W. and Courtland St., on the waterfront. All visitors are required to wear flat-soled, closed-toe shoes. The tours include stairs and indoor/outdoor settings and are moderately strenuous. Tours scheduled to begin promptly at 1 p.m. Only visitors 13 years of age or older will be allowed to tour the treatment plant; all ages are welcome to tour the organics composting facility. Please call 722-3336 to make tour reservations.
