WLSSD Asks Residents to Delay Visits as Sites Reopen

DULUTH, MN—Western Lake Superior Sanitary District (WLSSD) opened its Yard Waste Compost Site yesterday to an enthusiastic response from the community. WLSSD’s Materials Recovery Center and Household Hazardous Waste Facility are slated to open next week.  As the facilities open, WLSSD officials caution residents to delay visits to the sites when possible, and to be prepared for longer wait times.  WLSSD is implementing new processes aimed at reducing contact between people to help prevent disease transmission. WLSSD’s popular reuse programs remain closed to reduce traffic at its sites.

“We had about 320 vehicles come through our yard waste site yesterday,” said Tim Lundell, WLSSD supervisor of solid waste operations. “We managed to get everyone through the facility, but folks had to wait longer than usual so we could limit how many people were on the site at a time. After some first day hurdles, the site is operating smoothly. We appreciate everyone’s patience and hope residents will understand there will be longer wait times at the Materials Recovery Center and Hazardous Waste Facility when they open next week.”

“Lots of people have been spring cleaning,” continued Lundell. “That’s actually a great thing! We just hope that those who can, will wait a bit longer to visit our facilities. There are likely to be long waits and lots of traffic during our first couple of weeks after opening.”

WLSSD officials advise area residents to visit WLSSD solid waste facilities only when necessary. When visiting WLSSD solid waste facilities, WLSSD asks that all customers wear a face covering while on the site. WLSSD will also limit the number of customers occupying operating areas at any given time. Waiting until later in the season to visit the facilities will help to reduce wait times and congestion. Facility openings are as follows:

WLSSD continues to encourage residents to use available disposal alternatives:

  • Call local garbage haulers who can provide special pickup services for yard waste, bulky materials, or provide dumpster rental for larger jobs.
