WLSSD Reminds Residents to Safely Dispose of Hot Ashes
DULUTH, MN—Western Lake Superior Sanitary District (WLSSD) reminds residents to exercise caution and follow safe practices when disposing of hot ash from wood stoves, fireplaces and campfires after a small fire started at WLSSD’s Yard Waste Compost Site yesterday.
“Our folks caught the fire early, and extinguished it quickly,” said Tim Lundell, WLSSD Operations and Maintenance Supervisor of Solid Waste. “The ash came in with someone’s load of leaves, and ignited in our leaf drop off area. Ash waste should never be put in with yard waste or household garbage. The hot embers retain heat and can re-ignite days or even weeks after being removed from heating and burning appliances if they are not fully cooled or extinguished. Ashes should only be stored in secure metal containers—preferably outdoors.”
WLSSD’s Materials Recovery Center provide metal containers for ash disposal. District residents can safely dispose of their ash waste in their own metal containers, or at the MRC once ashes are fully cooled and extinguished.
Headquartered in Duluth’s Lincoln Park neighborhood, Western Lake Superior Sanitary District provides award-winning wastewater and solid waste services to residents, businesses and industries within its 530 square mile legislative boundaries in Southern St. Louis and northern Carlton counties, and is a nationally recognized leader in pollution prevention.
