New Year, New You! WLSSD can help make your earth-friendly resolutions come true in 2022!

Resolutions. It’s that time year again—when many of us sit down and take a reflective look at the past year, and set an intention in ways grand and small, to live our best lives.

This often means lifestyle changes that might include new gym memberships, more vacation time, and more time with loved ones. All valiant efforts at a time when our motivation is peaking. But, have you ever made a resolution that involves a lifestyle change to protect the environment?  WLSSD has some tools to help you, and here are just a few:

1. Composting! Did you know that the food scraps you throw in the trash end up in the landfill, and create methane gas that contributes to climate change?  Those little scraps, ironically, can lead to big problems. Maybe this is the year to start composting? You can compost at home with your own DIY backyard system or a purchased outdoor bin.  Another option is to collect food scraps (in free compostable bags provided by WLSSD) and deliver them to a food scrap drop site near you! Our fabulously finished compost comes back around to the community as a soil amendment called Garden Green—just in time for spring to make the garden of your winter daydreams become a reality.
2. Bring your household hazardous waste to the right place! Have you been keeping a collection of paints, fertilizer, batteries and old car oil in the back corner of your garage, just waiting for the inspiration to deliver it to WLSSD for FREE, safe disposal and recycling? Do it! Make it your New Year’s resolution to take care of it in 2022! You’ll be so glad you did!
3. Maybe you also have a stash of furniture, a mattress or 2, and some retired electronics that are taking up emotional and physical space in your life? The New Year is a perfect time to bring them to WLSSD’s Materials Recovery Center and make space for all that sparks joy in 2022.
4. Are you newly inspired for recycling? Landfill space is at a premium, and we could use your help to throw away only what really needs to go in the trash. Check with your waste hauler to get all the details on what you can recycle.  Did you know you can recycle bubble wrap?  Yes, plastic film materials can be dropped off at certain locations in our region.  Please be sure you do not include any plastic bags or film plastic in your recycling bin. These plastics must be collected separately. If you make recycling a commitment for 2022, the Earth will thank you!
